I grew up on a farm where people just turned up.

Everyone kept an eye on everyone.

A family farm — where people just turned up to lend a hand

New-season mandarins, fresh eggs from the neighbour's chooks, and when the work ran late, a zucchini slice still warm in someone's oven. While they were there, they'd see us stacking boxes on a pallet and get in and help.

We lost the farm. The way it worked, we kept. Grandma's paw paws still do the rounds – it's Mum bringing them now, and the family's slowly turning orange.

My Mum and Simon carried that into thirty years of helping people in their own homes – they still visit families they met in 1994. The weekly knock, the light hand around the home, and the cuppa that's really the point.

All over the country, parents are growing older in quieter houses, their kids a flight away. The caring's still there – we've just lost the simple way to show up for each other.

So we built Trooperly: where you choose a local helper – and keep them. It grows the way it always did – someone putting their hand up.
